Mental Health and Mindset
I think it's fair to say that most people never fully realise how much health matters until it's compromised.
When you're diagnosed with a chronic illness, particularly one that significantly changes your daily life, there can be an enormous amount to navigate beyond the physical symptoms.
There's the uncertainty of what the future might look like, the frustration of not being able to do things you once took for granted, the constant adjustments, and sometimes the grief of the life you imagined you'd have.
When symptoms are relentless, it can be incredibly difficult to imagine feeling any differently.
I've certainly had my fair share of darker periods since being diagnosed with multiple disabling chronic illnesses in my twenties.
But over the years, alongside learning to manage my physical symptoms, I've also spent a lot of time learning how to navigate the emotional side of chronic illness.
Mindfulness, meditation, gratitude and some pretty profound shifts in perspective have all played a huge part in this.
Of course, none of these things can cure chronic illness or make the difficult days disappear, but they've helped me find more moments of joy, appreciation and peace within a life that's often unpredictable.
So I wanted to share some of the things that have resonated with me along the way, in case they might help you too.

PERSPECTIVE SHIFTS CHRONIC ILLNESS CAN REVEAL
Living with chronic illness can be mega challenging, and it's certainly not an experience I'd wish upon anyone.
But I also think that going through something that changes your life so significantly can bring about a profound shift in how you see the world.
You begin to question things you previously took for granted, what really matters to you, what makes a good day, and even what it means to be happy.
I've spoken to lots of people with chronic illnesses who've experienced similar realisations, although of course everyone's journey is different.
Here are some of the perspective shifts that have had the biggest impact on me.
1. YOU CAN'T WAIT UNTIL LIFE ISN'T HARD ANY MORE BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO BE HAPPY
A few years after my diagnoses, when I was in a particularly difficult place mentally, I came across a quote from Jane Marczewski, also known as Nightbirde, who had been battling cancer for several years.
"You can't wait until life isn't hard any more before you decide to be happy."
And honestly, this phrase stuck with me SO MUCH.
When you live with chronic pain, fatigue and other relentless symptoms, it's incredibly easy to fall into the habit of wishing away the days until you feel better.
I'd find myself putting off tasks, socialising, plans, even the tiniest things, in the hope that tomorrow I'd feel more capable of doing them.
And of course, rest and pacing are SO important when you're chronically ill, so sometimes putting things off is absolutely necessary.
But I started to realise that there was a difference between resting because my body needed it and mentally putting my whole life on hold until my health improved.
Because when you're dealing with chronic illnesses, there isn't necessarily an expiry date.
You don't know whether you're going to feel better tomorrow, next week or next year.
And suddenly, you can find yourself living in this strange state of limbo, constantly waiting for a future version of life where things will finally be easier.
The quote really challenged me to think about what it would look like to stop waiting for everything to be perfect before allowing myself to find some happiness.
Instead, I began looking for little moments of beauty, gratitude and joy within whatever kind of day I was having.
Sometimes that's something tiny, like watching the birds outside, enjoying a cup of tea, feeling the sun on my skin or simply being comfortable for a little while.
It doesn't mean that I don't still have awful days, because I absolutely do.
But I don't want to wish my life away waiting for a version of myself that might never exist.
And I think that's one of the most important things chronic illness has taught me. Thank you Jane, and rest in peace.
2. YOU'RE ALIVE RIGHT NOW
Back in 2022, I was going through another particularly low period, something of an existential crisis that I think can happen when you're living with disabling chronic illnesses.
I came across a video where Sadhguru was talking about how the most important thing in our lives is simply that we're alive right now.
And this became a mantra that genuinely helped pull me out of that slump.
Because when we're dealing with pain, limitations, anxiety or the uncertainty of our health, our minds can become so consumed by everything that's difficult.
We can end up focusing on what we've lost, what we can't do, what might happen in the future, or everything that feels unfair.
And sometimes it takes a reminder of something incredibly simple to completely shift our perspective.
We're ALIVE.
We're here, in this human body, having this human experience, breathing, feeling, thinking and existing at this very moment.
And when you really stop to think about how remarkable that is, it's almost impossible to fathom.
There's an enormous amount that had to happen for each and every one of us to exist, and yet here we are.
It made me realise that all of the other things I consider important only have meaning to me because I'm here to experience them.
So when I'm having one of those darker moments and everything feels hopeless, I sometimes try to bring it back to that simplest fact.
I'm alive right now.
I'm breathing.
Isn't that remarkable in itself?
It doesn't solve everything that's going on in my body, but sometimes it changes the way I'm experiencing the moment.

3. LIVE EACH DAY AS IF IT'S YOUR FIRST, NOT YOUR LAST
This is actually something my dad, who passed away, used to say.
And I've always loved it.
We're often told to live every day as though it's our last, but my dad preferred to say we should live each day as if it's our first.
Because imagine experiencing the world for the very first time.
Seeing sunlight coming through the window, listening to birds singing, feeling the wind against your skin, tasting your favourite food or watching the colours of the sky change at sunset.
Things that are so ordinary to us would feel completely extraordinary.
And I think this idea is so beautiful, particularly when living with chronic illness.
When your world becomes smaller because of limitations, it's easy to focus on all the places you can't go or experiences you're missing out on.
But I've found that trying to view the things I can experience with a little more wonder and curiosity can make an enormous difference.
I spend the vast majority of my time at home, and I've adapted to finding enjoyment in an everyday routine that might look incredibly uneventful to somebody else.
But that doesn't mean there isn't still beauty in it.
Sometimes I think chronic illness has made me appreciate those ordinary moments more deeply than I ever would have otherwise.
4. YOUR DEFINITION OF A GOOD DAY MIGHT CHANGE
One of the strangest things about living with chronic illness for years is how much your perception of what's normal can change.
Before becoming significantly more unwell, I probably wouldn't have thought twice about leaving the house, seeing friends, doing chores, travelling somewhere or fitting loads into one day.
Now, my idea of an incredibly productive and energetic day can look completely different.
During my second trimester of pregnancy, for example, I kept saying how AMAZING I was feeling because I had so much more energy.
But when I actually stopped to compare my daily routine to that of somebody without chronic illness, it was still extremely limited.
On a really good day, I might go for an hour-long walk around my local area, come home and then spend the rest of the day sitting in my recliner.
Or instead of going for a walk, I might have enough energy to organise a cupboard or do some things around the house.
I still wasn't going out to socialise, taking trains or living anything like the kind of lifestyle I had before my health deteriorated.
But to me, it felt brilliant.
And that's because my expectations had changed so much.
Being able to move around the house, enjoy a little walk or do something productive without triggering a major flare-up can genuinely feel like a huge achievement.
I think learning to appreciate what a good day looks like for our own bodies, rather than constantly comparing it with somebody else's, can be a really powerful shift.
It doesn't mean we have to stop wanting more or feeling sad about the things we can't do.
But there's something lovely about recognising the wins that matter to us, however small they might appear to others.
5. NOT EVERYTHING HAS TO FEEL LIKE AN EMERGENCY
When you live with unpredictable health conditions, especially ones that can flare suddenly, it's understandable that your mind can become constantly alert to what might happen next.
For me, having several conditions that affect different parts of my body can make this particularly challenging.
There's always something to consider, from whether a joint might subluxate to avoiding MCAS triggers, managing migraine symptoms and trying to prevent one issue from setting off another.
And when so much of your life involves preparation and contingency plans, it's easy for that feeling of urgency to spill over into things that don't actually need an immediate response.
I've been learning to distinguish between situations that genuinely require action and things that can wait.
Not every task needs to be completed today.
Not every plan needs to be perfectly organised.
Sometimes it's okay to leave something unfinished, rest, and come back to it another time.
Of course, when it comes to medical symptoms, there are situations that do require urgent attention, and I would never advocate ignoring those.
But in everyday life, I'm trying to remind myself that I don't have to respond to every little thing as though it's an emergency.
And sometimes giving myself permission to slow down is exactly what I need.
6. YOU CAN EXPERIENCE JOY AND GRIEF AT THE SAME TIME
Something I've learned along the way is that living positively with chronic illness doesn't mean feeling positive all the time.
We can be grateful for the things we have whilst simultaneously grieving the things we've lost.
We can have a wonderful experience and still find it physically exhausting, painful or incredibly difficult to make happen.
We can be excited about something and anxious about how our bodies are going to cope.
And we can find moments of genuine happiness whilst still wishing our circumstances were different.
I think sometimes there's a misconception that acceptance means being completely at peace with everything that's happened to us.
But for me, it's been much more complicated than that.
There are things about my health that I've learnt to navigate and adapt to, and others that still frustrate me enormously.
I don't think we have to choose between being positive and acknowledging how difficult life can be.
Both can exist together.
And perhaps that's what living positively with chronic illness really means to me.
Not pretending everything is okay, but finding ways to experience the good alongside the difficult.
MINDFULNESS, MEDITATION & LIVING WITH CHRONIC ILLNESS
One of the things that's helped me put some of these perspective shifts into practice has been meditation.
I've always been particularly drawn to guided visualisations, where we can transport ourselves somewhere beautiful in our imagination, focus on feelings of gratitude or self-compassion, and take some time away from the constant thoughts running through our minds.
When you're spending a lot of time at home, or even confined to bed during a flare-up, I think there's something quite lovely about being able to imagine yourself floating in a warm tropical ocean, sitting on a beach at sunset or walking through a peaceful garden.
Of course, a meditation can't physically transport us there, but I've found that using my imagination in this way can sometimes make those moments feel a little more peaceful.
I've also used mindfulness techniques to help manage pain, particularly trying to notice when I'm unconsciously clenching my jaw, tightening my shoulders or bracing the rest of my body.
Something I explored further when preparing for birth through hypnobirthing was the idea of relaxing into sensations rather than automatically tensing against them.
It's MUCH easier said than done, especially when pain is intense, but I've found it useful to remind myself that sometimes the extra tension can add another layer of discomfort.
Meditation isn't always accessible or helpful in every situation, and there are times when I simply don't feel like doing it.
But when it does help, even if only a little, I think it's another lovely tool to have available.
So that's why I started creating my own guided meditations!
MY FREE GUIDED MEDITATIONS
I've written and recorded a collection of free guided meditations on Insight Timer, including some specifically for chronic illness, alongside visualisations for relaxation, gratitude, self-love, grounding and more.
A lot of them were inspired by things that have personally helped me through difficult periods, and I wanted to create something that other people could use too.
I've included each meditation below with a little description of what it involves so you can find something that resonates with how you're feeling.
I hope they bring you some comfort, relaxation or perhaps just a little moment of peace when you need it
CHRONIC ILLNESS, APPOINTMENTS & DIFFICULT DAYS
Self Love Meditation [Especially for chronic illness]
I created this meditation for those moments when you are feeling exasperated, frustrated, overwhelmed, filled with negative emotions, thoughts or pain. It's specifically designed for those experiencing chronic illness; either physical or mental. When I'm in these states, I often feel frustrated towards myself and my body, and this will only heighten my pain. So to get out of the thought cycle and fill yourself with the love you deserve, I've created this meditation.
In under 10 minutes you will acknowledge, but then release any unwanted emotions and feelings. You will visualise a powerful golden light as it flows through every cell in your body. Followed by some affirmations of all the things your body “CAN” do. Finishing with a bubble of your own self-love to remain and protect you. Remember, you are a warrior, you got this.
A little moment of calm before a medical appointment, especially if you're feeling nervous, overwhelmed or worried about how a consultation might go. It's short enough to listen to while getting ready or before heading into the appointment.
Just four minutes to keep it brief whilst in the waiting room or on your way out the door.
Anxiety and Stress Release Visualisation Meditation
This meditation was inspired by a concept of a visualisation my mum used to take me through as a child to release anxiety and worries!
Take 10 minutes to release any worries, anxieties, stressors or unwanted negative emotions. Ideal for either sleep or during the day when it’s needed.
We’ll begin with a breathing exercise and will then transport you to your own garden sanctuary in your imagination. With your ‘Worry Tree’ in the centre, you’ll unload anything unwanted. You’ll be grounded & protected by visualising the synergy of the flowing sunlight and earth energy.
For all levels. British female guide, background music.
Symptom Flare Up Meditation For Chronic Illness
A gentle meditation to support you through a familiar symptom flare-up or reaction, once you've taken any necessary medication or other steps to manage your symptoms.
We'll check in with how your body is feeling, use calming breathing, reassuring affirmations and a healing light visualisation to help ease anxiety and invite even a little more calm, comfort and self-compassion.
A reminder that your symptoms are valid, rest is productive and you don't have to push through.
Self Worth Meditation - Connect With Your Younger Self
Have you ever wondered whether something from your past is still affecting how you see yourself today?
In this reflective visualisation, we'll travel back in time to meet a younger version of ourselves who may have experienced something that knocked their confidence or sense of worth. You'll have the opportunity to revisit that memory, offer your younger self the kindness and unconditional love they deserved, and begin to see yourself through more compassionate eyes.
We'll finish with affirmations and a reminder that no experience can determine your worth.
I created this meditation for anyone and everyone so that you can fill yourself with the love you deserve.

BEACH, GRATITUDE AND VISUALIATION
Chakra Wash Body Scan and Grounding Meditation
With Vedic influences, this 10 minute meditation is a guided chakra wash body scan and grounding visualisation mediation.
Starting from the crown chakra at the top of the head, we’ll focus on each area, visualising the colour, relaxing each area and also being grateful for it and all that it does every single day. A great way to learn about the chakra colours and what areas they correspond to. Then, we’ll ground by visualising our energy flowing through to the core of the earth, and in turn, absorb powerful invigorating energies from it.
This meditation is for all levels. British female guide, background music.
Beach Visualisation Meditation - Serendipity And Abundance
In this relaxing beach immersion and visualisation meditation, we’re going to travel to an island that truly exists in Thailand, to a place named Serendipity Beach (pictured), with the audio as an actual recording from this location.
Take ten minutes out of your day to escape to this sanctuary whilst you harness some serendipity and abundance from this blissful place.
The first one has been recently released and is a healing beach meditation. I find the sunshine and ocean can be SO nourishing and cleansing, so for anyone who feels similar and can't physically visit a beach due to the pandemic, this guided visualisation meditation will transport to a secluded paradise beach in your imagination. You’ll float in the crystalline waters of the ocean absorbing the glorious healing light from the sun. With ethereal music and gentle wave sounds and under 10 minutes so it's great for beginner (or all!) meditation levels, without taking too much time out of your day.
Gratitude Beach Visualisation - Movie Of Your Life
This 14-minute guided gratitude visualisation mediation with music is set on an idyllic sandy beach, into the sanctuary of your consciousness where you’ll recline into a seat in the sand and look over the ocean during sunset where a movie projector displaying your memories will play back for you to watch, guiding you to focus on both key life events and even the smallest of things to be grateful for.
I’m so excited for you to join me on this journey!
Chakra Cleansing And Healing Pools Of Light Meditation
A 22 minute visualisation meditation set in your own private oasis-like sanctuary, with a waterfall that cascades down to a turquoise plunge pool beneath it, that is a magical and cleansing chakra healing pool.
You’ll be guided to float in the warm waters as the lights in the pool change according to the chakra colours from the red root chakra all the way up to the white crown chakra, where your cells will infuse in these healing waters whilst we release anything unwanted relevant to each chakra.
Finally you’ll be protected in a bubble, where you’ll then bask blissfully in all of the colours and finally emerge out of the pool back to the surface upon which you are lying down. I can’t wait for you to join me on this journey!
Connecting With The Soul Of A Loved One
In this 15 minute visualisation meditation, we’re going to travel through the stars to a portal, where we’ll connect with the soul of a loved one - perhaps they’ve passed on and are no longer here with us, or maybe they’re estranged and you’re not in communication.
This meditation enables you to envision your interaction and feel closer to them again, to hopefully bring you some comfort.
It’s a practice I do personally to connect with my own father, who passed away over a decade ago.
